"I Know I’m
Not Alone": The Cultural Context of Spirituality and Religion
Among African American Women Coping with HIV/AIDS

The present paper deals with the lives of African American
living with HIV/AIDS. It explores the social and historical
context in which African American women use spirituality and
religion as coping strategies to deal with clinical in face-to
–face audio taped interviews with women from three agencies in
New-York state that provide HIV/AIDS services to people with
virus. It s part of ongoing research that I begin in 1992 to
investigate various aspects surrounding the overwhelming number
of African American women with HIV/AIDS.
