Contexts of a Myth A Comparison of Structural and Psychoanalytic Analysis
Vardesh Channa and Yun- Hee Choi

This paper is a comparative analysis of a psychoanalytical and a structuralist analysis of a myth. Basing it self on psychological anthropological literature and the theories of Levi Strauss and Sigmund Freud, it analyzes a myth from the East Godavari region of India; one that has also been depicted in a movie in Tamil language. It both illustrates certain world-view and symbolisms of worship and the analytical categories by which this myth can be decomposed in its constituent elements and related to the workings of the unconscious mind. The paper is also rich in ethnographic contents as it contextualizes the myth to a particular cultural and social setting.

Key Words: Myth, Sexuality, Binary opposition, Psychoanalysis.
