Child Birth and the Role of
Traditional Birth Attendants among the Savara and Jatapu
Communities, Andhra Pradesh by B.V Sharma & Jagannath Majhi
The Traditional Birth Attendants (TBAs) are viewed as important
health functionaries in the rural communities. It is believed
that they are divinely selected for their work and divinely
inspired in it. The TBAs have remained as the most suitable
persons for conducting deliveries in rural areas. They are
valued as well as respected for their easy availability and
cultural acceptability. This paper mainly focuses on role and
acceptability of the TBAs, their position in the society, and
obstetric practices followed by them in two tribal communities,
namely Jatapu and Savara of Andhra Pradesh. Specific aspects
analyzed for the study are acquisition of knowledge, training,
skills, and antenatal as well as postnatal care by the TBAs.
