Words from the field: A
future agenda for the Indian medical heritage?
Darshan Shankar
The healthcare scenario in urban India and globally is
undergoing dramatic transformation, evolving into a new
situation that emphasizes preventive health, customized care,
body-mind medicine and the use of natural products. Health
seeking behaviour studies testify the undeniable and widespread
acceptance of complementary medicine. It is in this context that
there is in recent times a national and international resurgence
of interest in Indian medicine. The rich and mature medical
heritage of India puts this country in a position to provide
leadership to the emerging complementary health movement. The
challenge is to rediscover the epistemology and thus restore
creativity of indigenous knowledge systems.
